Berry Overnight Oats with Flaxseed Oil
Overnight oats are one of the easiest ways to prepare breakfast ahead. The oats soften slowly in milk and yoghurt, while mashed berries create natural sweetness and colour.
Flaxseed oil is stirred in cold just before chilling. Its gentle nutty taste suits oats and berries, and the recipe avoids heating an oil that is best enjoyed unheated.
Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 0 minutes Extra time: 6 hours or overnight Serves: 2
Ingredients
- 100g rolled oats
- 150ml milk or unsweetened plant milk
- 100g natural yoghurt or plant-based yoghurt
- 100g mixed berries, plus extra to serve
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 2 tsp cold pressed flaxseed oil
- 1–2 tsp honey or maple syrup, to taste
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- A small pinch of salt
Method
- Mash half of the berries with a fork, leaving some texture.
- Mix the oats, milk, yoghurt, mashed berries, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil, sweetener, vanilla and salt in a bowl or two jars.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight.
- Stir before serving. Add a splash of milk if the oats are too thick and top with the remaining fresh berries.

Why this oil works
Flaxseed oil has a mild, nutty flavour that blends naturally into oats. It should not be used for frying; this chilled recipe keeps it completely unheated and makes it easy to measure into individual portions.

Tips and variations
- Use rolled oats rather than instant oats for a better texture.
- Frozen berries work well in the mixture and will thaw overnight.
- Add chia seeds only if you also add a little more milk, as they thicken the oats quickly.
- Keep flaxseed oil refrigerated after opening if the bottle instructions advise it, and use clean utensils.
Storage
Keep the oats covered in the fridge and eat within 2 days. Add delicate toppings such as fresh berries or nuts just before serving so they stay at their best.
Frequently asked questions
Can overnight oats be warmed up?
The oats can be warmed separately, but add the flaxseed oil only after they have cooled to a comfortable eating temperature.
Can I make this recipe dairy-free?
Yes. Use your preferred plant milk and a plain plant-based yoghurt.
Why are my overnight oats too thick?
Oats and ground seeds absorb liquid over time. Stir in one or two tablespoons of milk before serving.
